Metal Roofing in Salem, Oregon

Metal roofs shed Oregon rain, moss and debris and last for decades. We install panel systems on homes, shops and farm buildings across the valley.

Drive through the farmland around Gervais and you see the case for metal roofing everywhere: red barns, machine shops and outbuildings wearing corrugated steel that has weathered decades of wet winters. The same qualities that make metal a farm standard, smooth surface, quick water shedding and little for moss to hold onto, make it a smart choice for houses too.

There are two broad families of metal roofing. Exposed-fastener panels are the traditional corrugated look and the most economical. Standing-seam panels hide the fasteners under raised seams for a cleaner appearance and fewer penetrations that can leak. We will talk through which fits your building, budget and tolerance for upkeep.

Metal is unforgiving of sloppy detailing, so we pay attention to the things that make it last: solid framing or decking, proper underlayment to manage condensation, the right fasteners and washers, and well-sealed trim at ridges, eaves and walls. A photo from one of our recent metal jobs shows a crew member working the panels on a red barn roof.

When metal roofing is worth considering

  • You own a barn, shop, garage or outbuilding with an old, leaking or rusting roof
  • Your shaded shingle roof keeps growing moss and you want a smoother, lower-maintenance surface
  • You are building an addition or porch and want a roof with a clean, modern or farmhouse look
  • You plan to stay in the home long enough to benefit from a longer-lasting roof
  • You want to reduce repeated roof repairs and replacements over time

How we install a metal roof

  1. Assess structure and pick the panelWe check framing, deck or purlin spacing and slope, then choose between exposed-fastener and standing-seam panels.
  2. Prepare the surfaceOld roofing comes off where needed, damaged wood is replaced and underlayment goes down to manage moisture.
  3. Install trim and panelsEave and rake metal go on first, then panels are set square, fastened to specification and lapped to shed water.
  4. Ridge, flashing and final checkRidge caps, wall and penetration flashing are sealed, and we inspect every seam before cleanup.

What drives the cost of a metal roof

Metal costs more up front than basic shingles. The final price depends on these items.

Panel typeExposed-fastener corrugated panels are the lower-cost option, while standing-seam systems cost more and look cleaner.
Gauge and finishThicker metal and higher-grade paint finishes cost more and typically carry better warranties.
Roof complexityHips, valleys, dormers and many penetrations all add cutting and trim work.
Removal and underlaymentStripping an old roof and installing underlayment adds labor and disposal.
Access and heightTall buildings and hard-to-reach slopes slow the crew down.

Questions about metal roofing

Is a metal roof loud in the rain?
Over a solid deck with underlayment, metal is generally no louder than other roofs inside a house. Open-framed barns and sheds are noisier, which is part of their character.
Standing seam or exposed fastener: which should I choose?
Exposed-fastener panels cost less and suit barns and outbuildings. Standing seam hides the fasteners and tends to look better on homes, at a higher price. We help you weigh cost against appearance and upkeep.
Can metal go over my existing shingles?
Sometimes, depending on code, the condition of the roof and the panel system. In many cases we recommend removing old roofing so we can inspect the deck and avoid trapping moisture.
Does a metal roof need maintenance?
Very little. Periodically check fasteners and sealants, keep gutters clear and rinse off debris. Leaves and needles left sitting can stain the finish.
Does a metal roof attract lightning?
No. A metal roof does not make your house more likely to be struck, and because it is non-combustible it can handle a strike better than many other roofing materials.
